Power Pedestal Installation Instructions

General - Applicable to All Pedestals

Safety & Code

  • Turn OFF power at the circuit breaker before installation.
  • Follow all applicable NEC and local electrical codes.
  • Only use UL-listed splicing materials and weatherproof covers.

Conduit & Cable Routing

  • Do not fasten or strap conduit, raceways, or cables to the pedestal body.
  • Form S-loops in all conductors to allow for movement due to temperature changes, grade shifts, and soil subsidence.
  • When routing fixtures or raceways out of the top of the pedestal, use a proper Meyer’s hub, sealing locknut, or sealing washer to maintain the Type 3R rating.
  • Pedoc pedestals have no knockouts. Mounting holes for fixtures or photocells must be drilled before installation.
  • Models with an integral base accommodate two 1-1/2" conduit raceways through the bottom opening.

Grounding & Electrical Connections

  • The ground conductor must be run with the supply conductors.
  • Terminate the ground wire to the Pedoc ground screw/terminal provided inside the pedestal.
  • Maintain internal S-loop slack in all wiring to prevent strain on conductors or terminations.
  • Use only UL-approved splicing equipment, materials, or kits.

Wiring

  • Pedoc Hinged-Top Models: Receptacles mount to the removable internal mounting plate.
    • 1-Gang: accept UL/CSA-listed GFCI receptacles rated 20A max.
    • 5x5: accept UL/CSA-listed RT/RTT receptacles rated 60A max, and UL/CSA-listed WFXV/WFXVT switches rated 60A max.
  • Pedoc Standard (Non-Hinged) Models
    • Receptacles: accept UL/CSA-listed RT/RTT rated 60A max, and UL/CSA-listed WFXV/WFXVT switches rated 60A max.
    • Covers: Accept UL-listed metallic or non-metallic weatherproof outlet box covers:
      • QCM2 / QCM2Z (metallic)
      • QCIT / QCITZ (in-use cover)

Integral Base Pedestals: Models beginning with 1P, 2P, 5P

Mounting Steps

  • Position the pedestal on a level, solid surface (concrete pad or hardscape).Align the four 7/16″ holes in the pedestal base with drilled anchor locations.
  • Install the correct anchors per model height.
  • Verify pedestal is plumb and level before tightening.
  • Pull conduit into the base through the bottom raceway opening.
  • Maintain slack inside the pedestal to prevent stress on cords.

Anchoring

There are four mounting holes on the pedestal base. The following concrete anchoring hardware is included:

  • Models 36" and under: supplied with S.S. 1/4" anchors, washers, and acorn nuts
  • Models 42" and above: supplied with S.S. 3/8″ anchors, washers, and acorn nuts

Note: Models with a height above grade of 12 in. or less are for special applications only, as they do not meet UL Standard 1773, paragraph 5.3.1. “The distance between the marked final grade level of the mounting post/pedestal and the lowest live part shall not be less than 12 in." These models may be used in applications that extend the height requirement to allow for that 12 in. distance. Examples are concrete columns, piers, indoor installations that do not require a “3R” rating. Low voltage for communication applications, such as data, voice, Ethernet, or speaker wiring can be located lower than the 12 in. minimum.

Models with Internal Mounting Bracket: Models beginning with 4FMIM, 5FMIM

Mounting Steps

  • Remove the internal mounting bracket from the bottom of the pedestal and set aside the bracket and screws for reinstallation.
  • Use the internal mounting bracket as a template (or the dimensions provided) to drill four mounting holes in the concrete or hardscape surface.
  • Install four anchors suitable for the mounting surface.
  • Place the internal mounting bracket over the anchors and secure it using the supplied washers and hex nuts.
  • Pull conductors into the pedestal with adequate slack for wiring and device installation.
  • Follow Pedoc wiring requirements: form S-loops, do not fasten conduit to the pedestal body, and bring the ground conductor with the supply conductors to the pedestal’s ground terminal.
  • Set the pedestal over the internal mounting bracket and secure it using the supplied ¼"-20 × 7/16" flat head screws.
  • Ensure the pedestal is plumb and fully tightened.

Device Installation

  • Remove the device mounting plate and screws.
  • Terminate wiring to the device per code and fasten the device to the mounting plate using the supplied screws.
  • Reinstall the wired device mounting plate into the pedestal using the original two screws.
  • Confirm that the device is properly aligned within the pedestal.

Additional Notes

  • These models can accommodate one or two conduit raceways, depending on configuration.
  • Internal mounting bracket provides four (4) 7/16" mounting holes and supports two 1-1/4" conduit entries (per model group).
  • Models 12" in height are for special applications only, as they do not meet UL 1773 requirements for minimum live-part height above grade. Low-voltage communication wiring (data, Ethernet, speaker, etc.) may be located below 12" because it is not considered power wiring.

Direct Bury Pedestals

Mounting Steps

  • Excavate a hole deep enough to bury the pedestal 24 inches into the ground.
  • If a stable supporting method is not available, a concrete backfill or equivalent material may be used.
  • If concrete is used:
    • A layer of sand or similar backfill must first be placed around all cables or raceways.
    • This prevents conductors from becoming embedded in concrete and allows them to move independently of the pedestal.
    • Follow the “Do Not Fill Concrete Below This Line” guidance shown on the pedestal diagram.
  • Insert the pedestal into the hole and verify it is plumb, straight, and correctly oriented.
  • Use temporary bracing if needed to maintain alignment during backfill.
  • Route conduit through the bottom opening or through side slots as provided.
  • Backfill using clean soil, sand, or approved material, compacting in layers to ensure long-term stability.
  • Restore the final grade so the pedestal stands securely and the exposed height matches project requirements.

Additional Features

  • Removable front cover provides space for raceway placement and wire/cable installation.
  • Side slots are provided for additional raceway entry points.
  • Accommodates conduit raceways:
    • Up to 1″ through the side slots
    • Up to 1-1/2″ through the bottom opening
