By the end of the article, you’ll have a clear understanding of why companies like Pedoc Power Solutions are championing American-made products. Additionally, this shift can benefit your business. We’ll provide actionable steps you can take to evaluate the potential of reshoring for your own operations.
The Renaissance of Made in USA Manufacturing: Exploring the Benefits of Reshoring
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of companies bringing their manufacturing operations back to the United States. This movement, known as reshoring, is sparking a renaissance in American manufacturing. As we celebrate Manufacturing Month, it’s the perfect time to explore the numerous benefits of this shift and why it’s gaining momentum.
1. Shorter Lead Times and Improved Flexibility
One of the most significant advantages of domestic manufacturing is the dramatic reduction in lead times. Mike Haragan from Indigenous Pet Products highlights this benefit, stating, “Lead times in the United States are within four weeks.” This is in stark contrast to the months it can take to receive products from overseas. Haragan elaborates, “It takes me a month to get a load container from Vietnam. So I’m already there for a month or month on lead time plus for them to grind it plus for them to bring it here. And so you’re like three months out.”
At Pedoc Power Solutions, we’ve experienced firsthand how shorter lead times allow us to be more responsive to our customers’ needs. We can quickly adjust production schedules, implement design changes, and respond to urgent orders without the delays associated with international shipping and customs clearance.
2. Quality Control and Product Consistency
Made in USA products are often associated with higher quality, and for good reason. Joe Collura from STI-CO emphasizes, “I know for a fact, American-made products, the quality is much better.” This improved quality control is crucial for companies like Pedoc Power Solutions, where the reliability and durability of our outdoor power pedestals are paramount.
Melinda Marks, our representative, explains, “We rely on our vendors to provide that same level of quality, so we can pass it on.” This commitment to quality extends throughout the supply chain, ensuring that every component meets our exacting standards. Not only do we adhere to strict internal quality control measures, Pedoc products have been rigorously tested by Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL). This ensures electrical, fire, mechanical, and other safety compliance. Often times, overseas companies will bypass 3rd party testing because of the extensive documentation, cost and uncertainty of their product safety.
3. Enhanced Communication and Problem-Solving
The proximity of domestic suppliers and manufacturers facilitates better communication and faster problem-solving. Melinda Marks points out the value of face-to-face interactions with local suppliers: “Local sourcing for us has been instrumental to our company’s startup and growth. We’ve established strong relationships with local suppliers (some even down the street!) making communication seamless and allowing us to make things happen quickly.”
This close relationship with suppliers allows us at Pedoc Power Solutions to collaborate more effectively on product improvements and quickly address any issues that may arise. As Melinda notes, “This close relationship with suppliers allows us at Pedoc Power Solutions to collaborate more effectively on product improvements and quickly address any issues that may arise. As Melinda notes, “
4. Investment in American Jobs and Communities
Reshoring creates job opportunities for American workers and strengthens local communities. Joe Collura mentions, “We’re here to provide some really good jobs and opportunity through training.” At Pedoc Power Solutions, we take pride in contributing to our local economy and providing employment opportunities in the Chicago area.
Melinda Marks shares a touching example of this long-term investment in people: “We have a couple of folks that have been there since 1976 when our parent company, Marcres Metalwerks, was founded by my father, Ulrich Marks! Some employees had metal fabricating skills and others had no experience at all. My father invested in their development with encouragement, patience, hands-on mentoring and in general, treated employees like family. Like clockwork, at 9am everyday I can remember him walking the shop floor and stopping at each person’s station. He was there to lend a hand, help troubleshoot issues, provide encouragement and often have a personal conversation about family or just life in general. He was generous, fair and truly cared about everyone. To this day, they speak so highly of my dad and how he helped them and their families.”
5. Environmental Considerations
Domestic manufacturing often adheres to stricter environmental regulations compared to some overseas alternatives. Joe Collura touches on this, saying, “I think if we can control more of that and bring more stuff over here, we might do a better job for the people for tomorrow on the kids in that.”
“At Pedoc Power Solutions, we prioritize sustainable manufacturing by keeping our production local, which enables us to rigorously control our environmental impact. In many countries, environmental protection measures are minimal or nonexistent. However, in the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforces strict guidelines that U.S. manufacturers must follow. These minimize air and water pollution. These regulations cover the proper storage, use, and disposal of gases, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. Additionally, the transportation of goods across oceans significantly impacts the environment. While international shipping is regulated at a global level, there has been little progress in addressing its pollution. Click here to read more.”
6. Technological Advancements
American manufacturers are leveraging cutting-edge technology to stay competitive. Melinda Marks shares that Pedoc Power Solutions recently installed a robotic welder. This demonstrates how reshoring often goes hand-in-hand with technological innovation. This investment in advanced manufacturing techniques allows us to improve efficiency and maintain high quality standards.
Mike Haragan emphasizes the importance of this ongoing innovation: “I mean, if you’re not using technology and automation, you’re falling behind. I mean, you’ve got to do something to keep and keep the cost down.”
7. Customization and Rapid Prototyping
Being close to customers allows for easier customization and faster prototyping. Whether it’s for a large-scale or small sized project, at Pedoc Power Solutions, we can quickly develop custom solutions to meet specific customer requirements.
Just recently, the City of Joliet, a neighboring city, requested a custom solution for a large park and streetscape redevelopment. We were happy to host several of their team members to tour our facility. They met with our engineering and sales team. This face-to-face meeting not only helped develop trust in our products and team, it provided an opportunity to have productive and collaborative meeting. As Melinda reports, “We have their customized Pedocs in production and expect to deliver in a couple of weeks!”
8. Reduced Total Cost of Ownership
While labor costs might be higher in the US, factors like reduced shipping costs, lower inventory requirements, and decreased risk of supply chain disruptions. These factors can often result in a lower total cost of ownership for domestically manufactured products. Mike Haragan points out the hidden costs of overseas manufacturing: “I get fined 500,000 bucks, 3% of shipment, 5% of shipment. And you can’t make a company run profitably if you’re getting all these fines consistently from everybody else.”
9. Pride in American-Made Products: The Benefits of Domestic Manufacturing
There’s a growing consumer preference for Made in USA products. As Melinda Marks advises, “Be proud and get it out there. Let people know Hey, this is what we’re doing and market it.” At Pedoc Power Solutions, we proudly display our commitment to American manufacturing. We know it resonates with our customers who value quality, reliability, and supporting the domestic economy.
Conclusion: The Benefits of Domestic Manufacturing
The renaissance of Made in USA manufacturing is driven by a combination of economic, strategic, and patriotic factors. As companies like Pedoc Power Solutions, Indigenous Pet Products, and STI-CO demonstrate, reshoring offers numerous benefits that extend beyond the bottom line. It’s about creating quality products, supporting American workers, and building a more resilient and innovative manufacturing sector. The benefits of domestic manufacturing are many as stated above.
